Villa Aragon

This thoughtful addition to a historic home in Coral Gables takes nods from the original home’s Mediterranean and Art Deco influences.

This collaboration with Martinez Alvarez Architects brought new life and livability to this almost 100-year-old home. The additions reference the original structure while bringing in new details that give the home another century of life.

Exterior: The original home had both Mediterranean and Art Deco influences, characterized by the moroccan arch entry, low gabled roof, corner window, and lightly textured stucco. The addition incorporates some of those references and adds its own vernacular. The arched pond reflects the entry door. The corner window at the second story mirrors the one at the first floor. The small circle window with the parapet roof below and the stucco band brings in Art Deco elements. The rear balcony with wood corbels references those above the front door. Finally, the carport is restored, creating an internal courtyard for respite and space delineating the addition from the original home.

Formal Living Room: Upon entering the home, we kept the bones while accentuating the existing space. In the entry area we used a marble mosaic floor to bring it to life, and create a show-stopping entry. We used a brass inlay to transition from the marble mosaic floor to a herringbone pattern that goes through all of the common areas.

Transition Space: The addition is added on thoughtfully by creating an H Space that compresses and opens.

Kitchen and Family Room: The kitchen and family room are in the addition, which allows higher ceilings and open space. The kitchen marries both traditional and modern elements to reference the historic home while being useful for a modern family. Using different tones breaks up the cabinets and the countertops making the kitchen feel open and mixed in with the entire room.

Bedrooms and More: In a custom home like this, each room brings a different style while remaining cohesive. The study has a large functional built in. The master bedroom has curtain coves with a moody color. The gym has a light cove and a large slat wall. The guest bath uses wallpaper to add character to a stylish space.

Bathrooms: Each bathroom has its own unique style, while coming together for a cohesive style The mix of tile, countertops and cabinetry bring each bath its own feeling and style.

A custom home like this is a collaboration of every subcontractor, designer, and owner. It takes a village, but the results speak for themselves.
